Couldn’t find a cotter pin for the castle nut? Just add a second nut. At least that’s what I thought must’ve been the idea when I took the hubcap off and saw this. But then...
After I pulled the ou ter nut off, the inner one wasn’t even screwed on - it was too big for the threads. What? What were they thinking?
Taking things apart. Blurry because it was getting dark. Didn’t really have time to do anything this weekend except spend a few minutes pulling things off the car.
Brakes don’t look as bad as I thought they would. Might not need to rebuild the calipers at all. Just replace the pads and hoses. One area of the inner fender was bubbling, and I stuck a screwdriver through it - but it’s also an area that needs to be reinforced with thicker metal for rally use anyway, so killing two birds with one stone when I weld that up.
...also need to learn to weld things up.

I was working on a Bobcat mower and the previous genius bent the wrong end of the cotter pin. popped out with the slightest tap. held i place by a little rust

The thought “good enough”. And apparently it was.....

Well, t hat’s scary. Scarier than any DIY pin I’ve seen, anyway . I mean, a cotter pin’s job is simple, so it doesn’t bother me all that much when I see nails, screws, coat hanger wire, etc. doing the job. All that stuff will work, so long as it doesn’t fall out.
But this? This doesn’t give me any confidence at all. Glad to see it at least managed to hold everything together long enough to get this far.

Don’t mind me asking, but have you already bought a welder? I'm thinking that might be my next major tool purchase.

I have not. Just watching videos seeing what I should go for.

Same. So far I'm still split on something like the Everlast Mig 140 or a more domestic model like the Lincoln EasyMig 140.

Bah, I mean Lincoln MigPak 140.

Are the axle threads bummed up close to the hub? Maybe the oversize nut was used as a spacer to push the actual nut out to good threads?
Still a sketchy thing to do, but in a pinch people do odd things.

They look fine. The car was already a work in progress when the PO died, so I’m wondering if maybe they did that to get a little extra “push” to seat the hub on the stub axle.
